The history of literature and the universal history of infamy are two different volumes of the same encyclopedia. Hence, from time to time, several questions arise: Is it possible that the same person the artist who creates a work full of humanity and the city that promotes inhumane ideas? Can not celebrate the first commemoration of the second? The first question has a clear answer: yes, it is possible. The latter remains a minefield.
last month in France opened a new chapter in this old rant. After including Louis-Ferdinand Céline, who died on July 1, 1961, in the National Celebration this year, the French Culture Ministry decided to remove it from the list. In 1932, Dr. Destouches Louis-Ferdinand Céline, published one of the greatest novels in the history of literature, Journey to the End of the night. That work brought its author at the height of Proust as a reformer of the French language while it became one of the best portrait of modern times: the global war on colonialism through the murky American dream. The novel is written with raw language and antisentimental, which means that, on that night, any sense to become a star follows humanity and emotion.
Five years later, in December 1937, Céline himself published a violently racist work end up polluting the reception of his novels: Bagatelles for slaughter. Far from becoming a stumbling block in France, the book sold just over 75,000 copies a year, an amount that today reach few authors with their novels, let alone with a non-fiction text . The fact that anti-Semitism is a French invention of the nineteenth century is much more than a fact illustrated by the famous Dreyfus Affair.
